This week flew by! I am so glad the heat wave in Southern California is finally behind us because it was HOT! Even being near the ocean, it was getting up to 89 degrees and more inland was in the 100º+ range. For a few days, we had to keep our blinds closed and the lights off to keep it from getting too hot inside. We don’t have central AC, so managing the heat can be a challenge.
I’m excited for this weekend! We don’t have many plans, which always makes me happy. One of my friends will be coming down from LA on Sunday to hang out for the day, which I know will be fun! Otherwise, I’m looking forward to just spending some relaxing time at home. Is it bad that that’s one of my favorite things!?
Reading
This week, our reading category is going to be listening. A friend of mine shared this podcast with me last week and while I know the host will immediately put some of you off, I would highly encourage you to try and look past that and listen anyway. This episode focuses on our food, toxins, and the American health system, and it was wildly thought-provoking. I have sent it to so many people in my life to listen because I learned so much from it that I had never known and had never even questioned. Dr. Casey Means and her brother are so well-educated and articulate on the subject, and they kept bringing up statistics and examples that just made sense. Honestly, up until listening to this, I had never paid attention to an ingredients label on anything before let alone on my cleaning products. I just used what I had always been taught to use and never questioned. As someone with extremely sensitive skin who breaks out in different kinds of rashes frequently and with nasal inflammation that makes it difficult to breathe through my nose, listening this made me wonder if these things could be related to toxins around me. So, I’ve recently embarked on a mission to detox my life. I understand that this isn’t something everyone is interested in, and I promise I’ll try not to get too woo-woo for you all, but I’m definitely going to be sharing some of the journey on here for those of you who are, including product recommendations and more. For me, this is definitely going to be a journey and I’m excited to explore what “clean living” means for me and what products I give my stamp of approval. I have always been very particular when it comes to cleaning products and detergents and have never swayed from my mom’s tried and true, so this is very out of my comfort zone.
Eating
As part of my mission to detox, I really want to focus on cooking meals at home as often as I possibly can. In the podcast, Dr. Casey Means says that she believes one of the best things we can do to take control of our health and our lives is cooking homemade meals at home using clean and safe ingredients and I really took that to heart. On Monday, I made Egg Roll in a Bowl and I tried a new recipe from my friend Amy Beth (in her “gf/df” Instagram Highlight). I also made this Marry Me Chicken Meatball Recipe that was delicious! I’m not actively trying to follow a gluten-free/dairy-free diet; I’m also not against trying recipes that fit that. This is one of my favorite recipes from Olivia Adriance that also happens to be gluten free/dairy free and it’s delicious!

Shane and I officially became members of Costco on Wednesday and WOW! Before that, I’d only ever been to a Costco one other time in my life, which is usually shocking to people, but it’s like Adult Disneyland to me! So many products to discover and they’re all big! We did a haul of some food staples we love and things we want to try to stock up and it was really great. I don’t see us going weekly, but definitely regularly enough to replenish our back stock when we need to.
Obsessing
I know we’re moving into Fall, but I shared this dress a couple of weeks ago on my Instagram, and I have been wearing it so much since it came in the mail! It’s been perfect while it’s still pretty warm out and I love how easy it is to style with sneakers. I wore it yesterday because I didn’t know what to wear and I thew a sweater over my shoulders since it was cloudy out. I love a dress that can be styled easily when you feel like you have nothing in your closet. It also comes in a sleeved version and a sleeved version in crepe material that I think would be great for moving into fall and winter. The crepe fabric is so easy to dress up too!
Recommending
If you’re tuning into my Instagram stories, you may have seen me share this black sweatshirt I recently got. I am such a fan of this sweatshirt! It’s soft, has a nice roomy fit, and it’s $50! Recently it’s seemed like sweatshirts have gotten SO expensive and I just can’t get behind it. I’m sure they’re nice, but I just can’t justify a plain simple crewneck sweatshirt that’s over $100… there’s just other things I’d rather spend that money on. This sweatshirt comes in so many colors, but what I love in particular is that most of the colors don’t have any logos on them, so it’s just a nice, clean look. I currently have my eyes on the navy blue and the white, which is on sale right now for $29.
Treating
This scalp scrub is one of my very favorite hair products of all time. I know I’m not the only one you’ve seen or heard talk about it, but it really is just that good. I ran out of my jar a few months ago and was resisting repurchasing because it’s expensive, so I tried some alternatives (including the version from Goop’s more budget friendly line at Target) and nothing compared. So, I finally sucked it up and ordered a replacement and as soon as I used it, I wondered why I waited so long. Sometimes you just don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone!
