After discussing my skincare routine with you all yesterday, I thought it seemed most fitting to talk about my makeup routine today since they kind of go hand in hand. When it comes to my skin, my beauty philosophy is very simple – my skin always comes first. I try to stick to products that don’t clog my pores up too much, don’t make me break out, and keep me looking as natural as possible. I like my makeup to help me look like the best version of myself, while still looking like me.
I think one of the things that is most crucial for me when it comes to wearing makeup is that I don’t wear face makeup every day. I try and go without it at least 2 days out of the work week and one day on the weekend to give my skin a break and a nice chance to breathe.
If you ask my mom, my makeup routine seems extremely over complicated, but honestly, I find it to be much simpler than that of my peers. The full routine is only 7 steps and doesn’t require any brushes or sponges. I mean, you can use them if you want, but I prefer to just put my makeup on with my hands.
Tinted moisturizer is my “everyday makeup” go-to. I’ve tried Nars’s, Bobbi Brown’s, and this Laura Mercier one, and I think this one is my favorite out of all three. It goes on super smooth, doesn’t have a strong smell, and doesn’t look cakey at all. It looks and feels just like a second skin. and I love it. I usually use about a garbanzo bean sized amount of product on my fingers, pat it all over my face, then rub it all in, smoothing out any unevenness.
After my tinted moisturizer, I follow with concealer. I’m a big fan of both this Glossier one and the YSL Touche Éclat. I usually opt for the Glossier one when I need more coverage and less brightening and I use the touche éclat when I look like I haven’t slept in weeks. It makes my eyes look like I got 8 hours of beauty rest in under a minute and I love it. Both concealers are super hydrating and neither get caught in your creases, which is a problem I find with a lot of concealers.
Next, I go in with my Glossier Haloscope Highlighter Stick in Quartz. Using my fingers, I blend the product on the high points of my brow bone right under my eyebrows, on the tip of my nose, and on my cupids bow. Then, I use the stick to make little crescent shapes on my temples and blend those in with my fingers too.
This Chanel Bronzer is one of my favorite recent beauty buys and completely worth every penny in my opinion. The container itself is huge and I can tell the product will last forever and it’s perfect for giving for face a little “kissed by the sun” tan without looking orange and without any shimmer. I personally don’t like shimmery bronzers, so this one is great for me. (I’ve also heard great things about Benefit’s Hoola Bronzer!) Again using my fingers, I dab my pointer finger in the jar and put the product across the bridge of my nose and in a little half-circle shape under my eyes like a sunglass tan. It sounds weird, but it ends up looking so nice!
For my eyelashes I curl them using my Utowa Eyelash Curler (the only eyelash curler I use) and then I rotate between this Chanel mascara that I received a sample of and this Trish McEvoy Lash Curling Mascara that is amazing and comes off completely using only warm water. If you’re wondering about the eyelash curler, Utowa is a brand founded by the son of Shu Uemura who’s eyelash curler has a cult following. Since the Shu Uemura eyelash curler isn’t available in the US anymore, this Utowa one is the next best thing and I promise, it’s incredible.
The only product I ever use on my brows is Glossier Boy Brow. I have naturally pretty thick eyebrows, so this product is all I need to keep them place and fill them in ever so slightly.
My last step is my lips! I usually do this as I am heading out the door, so I keep both of these items in my purse with me at all times. If I want a little bit of color, I’m obsessed with my Dior Lip Glow. After trying them all on, I went with the color Lilac, but if you are considering buying one I highly recommend doing so in store so that you can try them on first. What makes them unique is that the color adapts to your natural lip color and it really does look different on everyone. When I don’t want any color, I reach for my Glossier Birthday Cake Balm Dotcom, which gives my lips just the littlest bit of shimmer and keeps the hydrated for hours on end.
